8 Reasons Why Indians like spicy food?
The internet has been flooded with queries like why Indian people like spicy food, how can they eat so spicy food and so on... And today I thought of answering this FAQ – Why do Indians like to literally burn their taste buds in name of enjoying food?
TO PROTECT FOOD FROM GERMS
There are several bacteria and microbes that may spoil your food but the spices that are used in Indian Cooking contain chemical compounds that either kill or neutralize the affect of such bacteria, thereby making food safer to eat. And due to this reason, Indians started developing a taste for spicy food and now, they just get it in their genes.
IT IS IN OUR GENES
Did you read the last line in previous point? We just got this trait from our forefathers. Indian households are accustomed to cook spicy food. Therefore, you never get a chance to develop a taste that doesn’t involve number of spices. And the situation gets worse when you move to Northern India. Trust me on this! In North India, we put spices to get the tinge even in the Gujarati Food which is supposed to be a little sweet.
AFFECT OF THE CLIMATE
Countries with hotter climates involve more use of spices than the countries in colder climates. And that is very natural for you to get bewildered at the fact that some of the Indian dishes involve use of more than 10 spices. But this is very normal for Indian households.
If you keep following this blog, you would get to know about health benefits of each of the Indian spices and trust me! There are too many. So, we usually believe in multi tasking and try to get healthier while we fill in our tummies with scrumptious food.
HELPS IN COOLING DOWN
It’s a scientific fact that including spices in your diet helps you to cool down your body and aids in perspiration. While this might seem unnecessary for people living in cooler climates, this is a very beneficial activity for those who reside in countries like India.
BECAUSE WE CAN
Sorry if it sounds rude, but yep... eating extremely spicy food is a talent that seldom people possess and Indians have it in their blood. So, we can simply enjoy all versions of food without jumping around like a ninja after eating a couple of green chillies.
IT'S NATURAL FOR US
If you didn’t get the idea from the previous point, let me clear it out. When we put 10-12 spices in our food and savour it... we don’t really feel like it is ‘spicy’. So, it does make your question – ‘why do Indians eat spicy food’ invalid. Because it is normal for us.
IT IS OUR SIGNATURE
Everyone feels proud of one’s country and we love to flaunt the rich culture and traditions of our country. India is the land of spices, enjoying the status of producing maximum number of spices in the entire world. We don’t find a single reason to say no to use of excess spices in our food. We love it and so we will keep eating spicy food... FOREVER.
I hope the query is solved. Next question... Please. ;)
